I would characterize this book as combination of Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” and William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” in that it features a self-directed utopia of young folk who are forced into this society and, one could argue, tortured by some higher group.Īnd like all other books of this description, there is a movie version, this time released by 20th Century Fox in 2014. Though their retribution is not as straightforward and one would have to read Dashner’s sequel, “The Scorch Trials” to find out. The Creators, the people who put them there, have a lot to answer for for this inhumane terror, something the boys come to deliver when they eventually make it out of the maze. Among the terrifying possibilities is the presence of the Grievers, a robotic-like organism that hunts the boys with its saw-like arms.

Thomas quickly (and foolishly) becomes a Runner and learns that there are more secrets in the maze than previously thought.

Overall, it's a film with little depth, lots of nasty mayhem and a cast of cute boys meant to appeal to the same folks who love 'Twilight'.It seems you can’t turn a corner without running into a post-apocalyptic teen dystopia but I read “The Maze Runner” nonetheless and really did enjoy the story. In other words, they're mostly just there to be killed or survive but little else. Plus, in the 'The Hunger Games' films you have plucky and likable characters with some depth, but in 'The Maze Runner' they seem much more flat and ill-defined. Instead, it's just ultra-violent and nasty-with scores of teens being killed for our entertainment. It's violent and nihilistic without the interesting social commentary or originality that you get from the 'Hunger Games' films. So is the film any good? Well, it looks nice. And, given that it's already earned about three times its cost just here in the States, it's not surprising that the sequel is due to be released next September. In light of these big bucks, it's not surprising that 'Maze Runner' would make it to the screen, since it's just the first of three books-three books which seem strongly inspired by 'The Hunger Games'.only a bit gloomier. Some, such as the 'Golden Compass' simply fizzled whereas 'Twilight' and 'The Hunger Games' hit pay dirt.
